ANC slams Winde’s office over undisclosed R51 000 reimbursement

The African National Congress (ANC) has sharply criticized the administration of Western Cape Government Premier Alan Winde for what it describes as “dismissive and evasive” behaviour following the non-disclosure of a R51,000 reimbursement supplied by the Under2 Coalition.

According to the ANC caucus — represented by opposition leader Khalid Sayed — the reimbursement, received in April this year, was never declared in either the adjusted budget’s revenue section or in the legally mandated gifts and donations register.

Sayed said the omission calls into question the Western Cape government’s adherence to financial rules and undermines trust in its governance. He argued that the conduct of Winde’s department “undermines public trust and weakens the credibility of provincial governance.”

As a result, the ANC has formally contacted the registrar for Members’ Interests and lodged a complaint with the Public Protector’s Office — seeking external oversight and possible investigation.

While Winde’s office has defended the move, pointing out that the trip was disclosed in the Department of the Premier’s annual report, the ANC rejects that as sufficient — stressing that disclosure should have been made to the provincial legislature before the end of April.

The ANC insists this is not about the reimbursement per se – but about ensuring compliance, transparency, and accountability from public office-holders.
