‘Witness D’ Survived Two Assassination Attempts Before Fatal Shooting
Marius “Vlam” van der Merwe, the owner of QRF Task Team security company and a key partner in police operations against illegal mining on the East Rand, was tragically killed on Friday night. Van der Merwe, widely known as “Witness D,” had narrowly escaped death twice before.
His first brush with death occurred a few months ago during a major crackdown on illegal miners in Plastic City, where an attempted hit on him failed.
The second attempt followed just two weeks ago at the very same hotspot. During that incident, a bullet aimed at him struck a rock, causing it to deflect and skim across his forehead instead of ending his life.
But on Friday night, his luck ran out. While struggling to open the gate at his home, Van der Merwe was gunned down in cold blood — right in front of his wife and their two young children, aged eight and four.
