Two More Bodies Recovered at Kimberley’s Ekapa Mine

Kimberley, Northern Cape – Recovery efforts at the Ekapa diamond mine have taken another tragic turn, with reports confirming that two more bodies have been retrieved from underground following last month’s devastating mudslide.

The miners were among five workers trapped nearly 900 metres below ground after a sudden mud rush flooded the shaft on 17 February. Rescue teams have been working for weeks under extremely dangerous conditions to reach the victims.

Authorities had earlier indicated that the chances of survival were minimal due to the severe conditions underground, including rising water levels and unstable debris.

The latest recovery brings the total number of bodies retrieved closer to accounting for all five miners, although operations remain slow and complex. Officials say the process is being carried out cautiously to ensure the safety of rescue teams working deep underground.

Earlier this month, the first body was recovered, marking a painful milestone for families who have been waiting for closure since the incident occurred.

The tragedy has sparked widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny of safety conditions in the mining sector. Labour unions have criticised mine management, particularly after the company moved toward liquidation while recovery operations were still ongoing.

Families of the deceased miners have also voiced frustration over a lack of communication and support during the recovery process, describing the ordeal as emotionally devastating.

Authorities have opened an inquest docket, and investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of the mudslide and whether safety protocols were followed.

As recovery efforts continue, the focus remains on retrieving the remaining bodies and providing answers to grieving families, while the incident continues to raise serious questions about worker safety in South Africa’s mining industry.
