Mpumalanga Police Officer Kills Female Friend Before Taking Own Life

Mpumalanga – A tragic shooting incident involving a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer has left two people dead in what is believed to be a murder-suicide in Grootvlei, near Balfour.

According to police reports, a 53-year-old police captain attached to the Bethal Police Station allegedly shot and killed a 37-year-old woman, described as his female friend, before turning the gun on himself.

The incident reportedly unfolded when the officer went to the woman’s home, where she was with her sister. After they refused to let him in, he allegedly broke a window to gain entry. He then chased the sister out of the house, leaving him alone with the victim.

The sister reportedly went to seek help, prompting a police response. Upon arrival, officers discovered both the captain and the woman lying on the floor with gunshot wounds. They were declared dead at the scene.

Authorities confirmed that the officer’s service pistol was recovered at the scene, and cases of murder and an inquest have been opened as investigations continue.

Provincial police leadership has expressed shock and sadness over the incident, extending condolences to the families of both victims. Officials have also urged officers facing personal or professional challenges to seek help through available wellness programmes.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.

The incident has once again raised concerns about violence involving firearms and the mental well-being of law enforcement officials in South Africa.
