Johannesburg, 11 December 2025 – The African National Congress (ANC) has begun its 5th National General Council (NGC) in Johannesburg (Ekurhuleni), bringing together thousands of party members for a critical mid‑term review of organisational progress and direction. The four‑day gathering, running from 8–11 December, is a key forum for assessing the party’s performance since its last national conference and pushing forward plans for renewal.

The NGC is the ANC’s second‑highest decision‑making body and is taking place under the theme “The Year of Renewal to Make the ANC a More Effective Instrument of the People to Achieve the Vision of the Freedom Charter.” Delegates will debate leadership succession management, organisational unity, poverty alleviation, alliances, and strategies to rebuild the ANC’s credibility with South Africans.

ANC leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, have used the platform to address critical issues facing the movement and the country. Ramaphosa reiterated that there is “no room for criminals or extortionists in the ANC”, warning members that corruption and criminality threaten the party’s credibility.

Meanwhile, Secretary‑General Fikile Mbalula emphasised the task of renewal and rejuvenation, urging that party renewal take place at all levels, including within the Government of National Unity (GNU). He told delegates that the NGC is occurring at a decisive moment for South Africa’s democracy and that discussions must translate into concrete action.

The NGC also faces internal tensions, including calls to convene an alliance summit amid strains with the South African Communist Party (SACP), which party leaders believe could influence the ANC’s strategy ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

Outside the council venue, some ANC staff protested unpaid salaries, warning of a difficult festive season for workers affected by delayed pay — highlighting ongoing organisational and financial challenges within the historic liberation movement.

As the NGC continues, delegates will shape resolutions and strategic direction for the ANC, aiming to strengthen its role as the dominant political force and rebuild trust among voters ahead of future elections.
