The deputy principal of Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton has been shot and taken to hospital.

The deputy principal of Dinoto Technical Secondary School in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was reportedly shot this morning as he entered the school premises.

The Benoni City Times reports that according to the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the deputy principal sustained injuries during the incident and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is receiving medical attention.

Counselling and support provided
GDE spokesperson Steve Mabona confirms that psychological support teams, including officials from the Ekurhuleni North District, have been deployed to the school to provide counselling and support to teachers, students and staff who may have been affected by the incident.

“Despite this unfortunate incident, the school has continued with the ongoing matriculation examinations under close supervision to ensure minimal disruption and maintain a safe environment for all learners,” said Mabona.

Minister condemns attack
Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane has expressed shock at the incident and condemned the attack in the strongest terms.

“Schools are meant to be safe places for learners and teachers. We wish the deputy principal a full and speedy recovery and we urge law enforcement authorities to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.”

In October last year, Sipho Nhlengethwa, the deputy principal of Rivoni Secondary School, was shot dead in the Chris Hani area of ​​Daveyton while attending a meeting related to a case involving one of his colleagues.

Police have confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened and investigations are ongoing.
