IEC Urges Young South Africans to Register on Final Voter Registration Day
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has called on all eligible South Africans, especially young people, to make use of the final voter registration day ahead of the country’s Local Government Elections scheduled for November.
The commission stressed that voting gives citizens an opportunity to participate in shaping the future of their communities and the country through democratic decision-making. It encouraged first-time voters and those who have not yet registered to do so before the registration period closes.
In the Eastern Cape, the IEC reported that voter registration proceeded smoothly on Saturday despite community protests affecting six municipalities. Provincial Electoral Officer Kayakazi Magudumana said the commission had experienced a successful registration day and praised electoral officials for ensuring that voting stations remained operational where possible.
The IEC continues to encourage citizens to verify or update their registration details while they still have the opportunity. The commission has repeatedly emphasised that young people play a vital role in strengthening South Africa’s democracy and should actively participate in the electoral process by registering and voting.
South Africa’s Local Government Elections are expected to take place in November 2026, making this final registration weekend a crucial opportunity for eligible voters to secure their place on the voters’ roll.
