Vusi Thembekwayo Calls for Actor Payment Rules to Be Changed Following Seputla Sebogodi’s Death

Businessman Vusi Thembekwayo  says the way actors are paid in South Africa needs to change, following the death of veteran actor Seputla Sebogodi.

Thembekwayo says honouring Sebogodi should not only be about sending messages of condolences, but should also prompt a review of the rules governing how actors are paid.

He criticised the so-called “pay once” system, where an actor is paid only once for the work they have done, without receiving additional income when a television show or film is rebroadcast or its licence is used elsewhere.

Thembekwayo says actors spend years entertaining audiences and creating productions that continue to be watched for many years, yet they often do not receive additional income when their work continues generating revenue.

He says some actors sign contracts that take away their rights to receive further payments from their work, potentially leaving them facing financial difficulties later in life.

Sebogodi was one of South Africa’s most respected actors and became widely known for his role as Kenneth Mashaba on Generations. He died on 15 July 2026 following complications related to diabetes.
