South Africa in Talks With Nigeria for Fuel Supply Amid Global Shortages

South Africa is reportedly in discussions with Nigeria to secure a 12‑month fuel supply deal as countries around the world scramble to find reliable sources amid tightening global markets.

The government is seeking to diversify its fuel imports because much of the region’s fuel traditionally comes from the Middle East, making southern African countries vulnerable when supply is disrupted. Nigeria’s growing role as a regional producer, particularly through large refineries such as those owned by Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote, has made it a potential partner for South Africa.

Several nations, including Ghana and Kenya, have also approached Nigeria for fuel supplies, highlighting how the continent is adapting to global energy shifts. Experts say Africa’s dependence on Middle Eastern fuel imports means disruptions there quickly affect local markets.

The move underlines South Africa’s efforts to enhance energy security by expanding its sources of refined petroleum, especially as traditional import routes face pressure from geopolitical tensions and supply chain challenges.
