Two Ugandan nationals, Serage Martin Lubenga and Rhoda Mirembe, have been arrested in connection with an alleged online romance fraud scheme that reportedly defrauded South African victims of approximately R650,000.
According to information released reportedly linked to the investigation, the suspects are accused of using online dating platforms and social media to establish romantic relationships with unsuspecting victims. Once trust was gained, the suspects allegedly manipulated victims into sending large sums of money under false pretences, including fabricated emergencies and promises of future meetings or business opportunities.
Authorities say the investigation uncovered a pattern consistent with romance-based cyber fraud, where emotional attachment is exploited for financial gain. Victims are often targeted over extended periods, making the deception difficult to detect until significant losses have already occurred.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the arrests form part of a broader crackdown on cybercrime and online scams, which have been increasing at an alarming rate across South Africa. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon, where they will face charges related to fraud, theft, and cybercrime, pending the outcome of ongoing investigations.
Officials have emphasized that the suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Growing Concern Over Romance Scams
This case highlights the growing threat posed by online romance scams, which continue to cause emotional and financial devastation to victims. Criminal syndicates often operate across borders, complicating investigations and recovery of stolen funds.
Police have urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging with people online, particularly when asked for money or personal financial information. Individuals are advised to verify identities, avoid sending money to people they have never met in person, and report suspicious activity to authorities immediately.
Call for Vigilance
Authorities have reiterated the importance of public awareness in combating cybercrime and encouraged victims of online scams to come forward, noting that many cases go unreported due to embarrassment or fear.
As the case proceeds through the legal system, it serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online relationships and the need for increased digital safety and vigilance in the online dating space.
