Suspect Arrested After R50 Million Stolen Construction Machines Recovered
Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested a 63-year-old man after stolen construction machinery valued at about R50 million was recovered during an intelligence-driven operation.
According to reports, the case dates back to December 2025, when heavy-duty machines were stolen from a construction site in Nkandla. The complainant later discovered that the equipment was allegedly being used at another location, prompting further investigations by authorities.
Police units, including the Provincial Reaction Unit and the Empangeni Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, followed up on information regarding the whereabouts of the machines. During an operation at a quarry in Newark, officers recovered two excavators and one TLB, which were confirmed to be part of the stolen equipment. The recovered machinery is estimated to be worth around R50 million.
Authorities later tracked down and arrested the suspect in Ekombe after additional cases were opened, including allegations of extortion, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of suspected stolen property. A truck believed to be linked to the case was also seized during the arrest.
Police confirmed that the suspect is expected to appear before the Nkandla Magistrate’s Court, where he will face several charges related to theft and illegal use of property.
The recovery of the expensive machinery is seen as a major breakthrough in efforts to combat organised crime targeting the construction industry. Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate whether more suspects could be linked to the case.
Authorities have urged businesses to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, as theft of heavy equipment continues to affect infrastructure projects and economic development across the country.
