Couple Found Hiding in Wardrobe as Police Bust Alleged Chop Shop in Verulam
A dramatic police raid in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal, led to the arrest of a couple who were found hiding inside a wardrobe after authorities uncovered an alleged vehicle chop shop operating at their property.
According to reports, the operation began after a tracking company detected a stolen Toyota Fortuner believed to be located at the residence. A Netstar helicopter was deployed to assist ground teams in locating the vehicle after signals placed it in the Ottawa area.
When police and private security teams entered the property, they allegedly discovered the stolen vehicle being stripped for parts in the backyard. Officers later found a man and woman hiding inside a wardrobe in the house. A third suspect who arrived at the scene during the operation was also arrested.
Authorities believe the suspects were running an illegal chop shop where stolen vehicles were dismantled and parts sold to panel beaters and second-hand spare dealers. Various vehicle components believed to be linked to other theft cases were also recovered during the raid.
Police seized the stripped vehicle and several car parts as evidence while investigations continue into a possible vehicle theft network operating in the area.
The arrests highlight ongoing efforts by law enforcement and tracking companies to clamp down on organised vehicle theft syndicates across KwaZulu-Natal.
Further charges may be added as investigations progress.
