743 Suspects Arrested as Police Intensify Operation Shanela in Limpopo
Police in Limpopo have strengthened their fight against crime through intensified Operation Shanela, leading to the arrest of hundreds of suspects linked to various serious offences across the province.
The high-density operation, conducted between 16 and 22 March 2026, involved coordinated activities such as roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, compliance inspections and visible patrols in crime-affected areas.
According to reports, the operation resulted in the arrest of 743 suspects connected to crimes including rape, murder, attempted murder, burglary, robbery, assault and possession of illegal weapons. Police also arrested suspects for drug possession, driving under the influence of alcohol and violations of immigration laws.
During the operation, authorities confiscated various illegal items including firearms, ammunition, dangerous weapons, drugs and large quantities of alcohol believed to be linked to criminal activities.
Operation Shanela is part of a nationwide policing strategy aimed at reducing violent crime and improving safety in communities. The South African Police Service (SAPS) continues to conduct intelligence-driven operations targeting wanted suspects and criminal networks across different provinces.
Police confirmed that some of the suspects have already appeared in court, while investigations continue to determine whether more individuals could be linked to the crimes.
Authorities say these ongoing operations demonstrate their commitment to tackling crime and ensuring safer communities in Limpopo and across South Africa.
Further operations are expected as police continue efforts to combat criminal activities and maintain law and order.
