Standard Bank IT Operator Accused of Stealing R1.9 Million Granted Bail

Johannesburg – A former IT operator at Standard Bank has been granted bail after being accused of embezzling more than **R1.9 million** from the financial institution.

The accused, Vivian Brink (60), was arrested on Monday, 12 January, at his home in Rosettenville and made his first court appearance the following day. He faces charges of theft and fraud linked to alleged offences committed between January 2014 and November 2017, while employed as an IT operator at the bank.

The case is being investigated by the Hawks.

According to Hawks spokesperson Thatohatsi Mavimbela, Brink allegedly abused his position to manipulate Standard Bank’s internal systems for personal financial gain.

“It is alleged that the suspect manipulated his personal bank account by unlawfully increasing his overdraft limit, resulting in an actual loss of over R1.9 million to his employer,” Mavimbela said.

Investigators believe Brink used his insider knowledge of the bank’s IT systems to carry out the scheme over nearly four years.

Brink was granted R5,000 bail, and the matter was postponed to 3 February, when it will be heard at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crimes Court.

The Hawks confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and additional charges may follow as more evidence is gathered.

### Related Case Highlights Ongoing Internal Fraud Risks

The case follows a similar incident last year involving  Rachel Tsakani Bloko (38), who appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on fraud charges exceeding R130,000.

At the time, Limpopo police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba said Bloko allegedly used unsuspecting clients’ personal details to apply for loans without their knowledge.

These cases highlight the continued risk of internal fraud within financial institutions and the importance of strong monitoring and internal control systems.
