Limpopo coach killed over alleged muthi dispute at local tournament
The Limpopo football community is mourning the death of popular local coach Kwena Katiba (29), who was allegedly murdered following a dispute over muthi during a soccer tournament at Ga-Dikgale, Marobala, on Christmas Day.
Katiba, the owner and coach of Survivors FC Academy, based in Turfloop Unit D outside Polokwane, was struck by a vehicle near the pitch and later succumbed to his injuries at Mankweng Hospital.
According to a preliminary police report, the incident occurred during the Mamathipa Soccer Challenge. Katiba allegedly confronted the driver of a taxi—who is also the owner and coach of Juventus FC, the opposing team—after noticing him removing a bag from the goalposts. Eyewitnesses claim the bag was suspected to contain muthi.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into a heated argument, during which the suspect allegedly drove over Katiba on the R81.
A 37-year-old suspect has been arrested and is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 29 December 2025, facing a charge of murder. Police investigations are ongoing.
