Two Bodies Discovered During Illegal Mining Operation in Cloverdene

CLOVERDENE – Two unidentified male bodies were discovered on Monday, 15 December 2025, at the Cloverdene informal settlement during an operation linked to illegal mining activities.

According to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), officers from the Intervention Unit were alerted to the scene by concerned community members. Upon arrival, the officers found the bodies with visible signs that suggested possible foul play.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) from the Crystal Park area were called in to take over the investigation. An inquest docket has since been opened as authorities work to establish the identities of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Police also recovered various alcohol-related items at the scene, which were booked into evidence for safekeeping as part of the investigation.

The EMPD has appealed to residents to continue working with law enforcement by reporting any suspicious or criminal activities. Authorities say community cooperation remains critical in ensuring safety and protecting the wellbeing of residents in the area.
