Bus Driver Arrested After Attempting to Flee Overloaded Bus Stop in Polokwane

Motorists were left stunned on Wednesday morning after traffic officers intercepted a dangerously overloaded cross-border bus on the N1 Bypass in Polokwane.

The 65-seater bus was carrying a shocking 117 passengers, including 15 minors, and was travelling from Gauteng to Malawi. This meant the vehicle was overloaded by 52 passengers, posing a serious safety risk.

Traffic officers instructed the driver to proceed to the Provincial Traffic Control Centre (PTCC). However, the bus broke down near the Polokwane weighbridge before reaching its destination.

Drama unfolded when the driver allegedly attempted to flee the scene on foot. Members of South African Police Service (SAPS), working together with Limpopo Traffic Officers, swiftly chased him down, restrained him and placed him under arrest.

The bus has since been impounded at the PTCC and will remain there until all excess passengers are safely removed and the required fine is paid.

Authorities have confirmed that further investigations are underway, as the incident raises serious concerns about passenger safety and compliance with road traffic regulations
