• The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party’s motion to oust Premier Thamsanqa “Thami” Ntuli failed in the KZN Provincial Legislature after MPs voted not to support it. The motion would have required a majority to succeed but did not secure enough votes.

• Speaker Nontembeko Boyce announced the motion had failed, confirming Ntuli remains premier and the house was adjourned.

• Violence and disorder erupted immediately after the result was announced. Members from the MK Party — with support from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) — sang struggle songs, protested and clashed with police inside the chamber.

• There were scuffles between MPLs and police after Speaker Boyce ruled the vote would be open (not secret) — a decision contested by the MK Party and EFF.

• Water bottles were thrown and members were ejected from the chamber before order was eventually restored.

🚑 Injuries and Medical Response

• A MK Party member collapsed during the chaos and was treated by paramedics, and another MPL was reportedly injured and taken to hospital after clashes with police. Members have alleged the injury occurred when police moved in to restore order.

🧭 Political Context

• The MK Party pushed for the no-confidence vote amid broader political tensions in the province, arguing Ntuli’s government lacked effective leadership and failed to address key issues, including unemployment and governance concerns.
The Witness

• Opposing parties — including the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and National Freedom Party (NFP) — maintained support for Ntuli, forming a Government of Provincial Unity that held the majority of seats
