KWAZULU-NATAL DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CONDEMNS NURSE FOR ASSAULTING PATIENT

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health, led by MEC Nomagugu Simelane, has strongly condemned a video circulating on social media showing a nurse allegedly assaulting a patient at King Dinuzulu Hospital.

The Department says the conduct seen in the video is completely unacceptable and goes against the fundamental principles of the healthcare system, which require patients to be treated with dignity, respect and proper care.

According to the Department, the video appears to show the healthcare worker striking the patient in the face while also making inappropriate remarks.

The Department says it has acted swiftly following the emergence of the video. The nurse will be placed on precautionary suspension with immediate effect, pending a full internal investigation into the incident.

The Department stressed that assaulting or physically punishing patients has no place in healthcare facilities and will not be tolerated.

It said the matter is being investigated as a matter of urgency and that appropriate disciplinary action will be taken once the investigation has been concluded, depending on the findings.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has assured the public that it remains committed to ensuring that all patients are treated with the dignity, respect and care they deserve.
