Two suspected armed robbers posing as police officers were shot and killed following a high-speed chase and shootout with law enforcement in Parys, Free State.
According to police, the suspects were travelling in a VW Golf 7 believed to be linked to a series of armed robberies committed along routes between Gauteng and the Free State. The suspects allegedly targeted motorists by impersonating members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), using blue lights and wearing SAPS uniforms to stop vehicles.
The incident unfolded when police identified and attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspects reportedly fled, leading to a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, the suspects allegedly opened fire on police officers, prompting officers to return fire.
Both suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange and were declared dead at the scene.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of unlicensed firearms, SAPS uniforms, and blue lights, confirming suspicions that the suspects were part of a group known as “blue light robbers” — criminals who impersonate police to carry out robberies.
No police officers were injured during the incident.
Police have welcomed the breakthrough, noting that the suspects were believed to be responsible for multiple robberies affecting motorists travelling between provinces. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether additional suspects are involved and to link the recovered items to other reported crimes.
Authorities have once again urged motorists to remain vigilant and to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer, especially when stopped in isolated areas or at night. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious vehicles displaying blue lights to the nearest police station or emergency number.
The case highlights ongoing efforts by SAPS to combat organised violent crime and protect road users across provincial borders.
