North West ANC Pushes for Fresh Debate on DA’s Role in the GNU

A wave of internal debate has swept through the African National Congress (ANC) as its North West province calls for the National General Council (NGC) to reconsider the role of the Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

Delegates from the province say the time has come for the party to take a “clear-eyed and honest” look at how the GNU is functioning, warning that several policy clashes with the DA have made collaboration increasingly strained. They argue that disagreements on transformation, economic policy, and social programmes have raised doubts about whether the current coalition still reflects the ANC’s political direction.

The North West branch believes that the ANC must protect its identity and ensure its governing partners do not dilute the movement’s mandate. Their call has added fresh pressure on the NGC to confront questions many party members have been quietly raising since the formation of the unity government.

National leadership, however, maintains that the GNU remains a crucial stabilising tool in a period marked by economic uncertainty and tight political margins. Leaders close to President Cyril Ramaphosa have urged delegates to safeguard unity and avoid decisions that could lead to instability within government.

The NGC’s final stance on the matter will likely signal the ANC’s future approach to coalition politics — and could have major implications for the longevity of the partnership with the DA.

With debates intensifying, all eyes remain on the NGC as the ruling party navigates one of its most delicate political balancing acts in years.
