Yusuf Cassim Says He Is Ignoring Online Hate and Focusing on His New Role
Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training Yusuf Cassim says he is refusing to let criticism and online hate distract him from his new responsibilities.
Cassim said he is focused on carrying out the mandate given to him by President Cyril Ramaphosa to improve South Africa’s higher education sector and address the challenges facing students. He added that he does not want to be distracted by negative comments on social media, where some users have questioned why President Ramaphosa appointed him, with some alleging that he is a foreign national.
One of Cassim’s main priorities, he said, is resolving issues affecting students, including NSFAS funding delays, student accommodation shortages, and speeding up responses to student appeals and complaints.
His appointment has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some social media users posting racist and religiously offensive comments directed at him.
Despite the criticism, Cassim said he remains committed to serving all South Africans. He stressed that people should judge him by the work he does and the impact he makes, rather than by comments circulating on social media.
