Department of Sport, Arts and Culture Mourns the Passing of Jayden Adams
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has expressed profound shock and sadness following the untimely passing of South African footballer Jayden Adams at the age of 25.
Adams, a gifted midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and a Bafana Bafana international, passed away just weeks after helping South Africa reach the FIFA World Cup knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history. He featured in all three group-stage matches during the 2026 tournament.
In a statement, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie said he was deeply saddened by the news of Adams’ passing.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams, midfielder for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana, at the age of 25,” the minister said.
McKenzie described Adams as one of South African football’s brightest young talents, saying the country mourns alongside his family, teammates, friends, and the millions of supporters who watched him develop into a respected international footballer.
The cause of Adams’ death has not yet been confirmed. Authorities have appealed for privacy for his family and urged the public to refrain from speculation while investigations continue.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football fraternity. The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) described his passing as a devastating loss and paid tribute to his humility, professionalism, and exceptional talent.
Adams had recently helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the CAF Champions League and was widely praised for his commitment to the national team, having continued to represent Bafana Bafana shortly after learning of the passing of his grandmother.
The South African football community and the nation continue to mourn the loss of a promising young star whose life was cut tragically short.
May he rest in peace.
