SA DJ Arrested Over Alleged Kidnapping Linked to Eastgate Mall
Johannesburg – A South African DJ is among four suspects arrested in connection with a kidnapping case linked to Eastgate Mall, following a swift police operation that rescued two victims unharmed.
According to reports, the arrests were made after a security guard at the mall noticed suspicious activity and alerted authorities, triggering an intelligence-driven response. Police acted quickly and apprehended three suspects at the shopping centre without incident.
Further investigations led officers to a house in Katlehong, believed to have been used as a safe house. When police arrived, they were reportedly met with gunfire, leading to a brief shootout. A fourth suspect was arrested at the scene, and two unlicensed firearms along with ammunition were recovered.
Inside the property, officers found two victims—a man and a woman—who were safely rescued. Authorities revealed that the female victim had earlier been hijacked and allegedly forced to transfer a large sum of money from her bank account during the ordeal.
One of the suspects arrested is reportedly a well-known DJ from the Vaal area, adding a high-profile element to the case. All four suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with police not ruling out further arrests.
The incident has raised concerns about organised kidnapping syndicates operating in and around Gauteng, as well as the growing use of public spaces like malls in coordinated criminal activities.
Authorities have praised the vigilance of the security guard and the rapid police response, which ultimately led to the safe recovery of the victims.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
