Putco Steps Up Road Safety Measures Ahead of Easter Travel Rush

As South Africa prepares for one of its busiest travel periods of the year, PUTCO is ramping up safety efforts ahead of the Easter weekend road rush, with traffic volumes expected to surge as holidaymakers travel to visit family and friends.

With the April 5 weekend fast approaching, road travel is set to increase significantly — not only from motorists but also from passengers using long‑distance commuter services. Thousands of pilgrims from the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) are forecast to travel to the annual pilgrimage site in Moria, Limpopo, with many choosing long‑distance bus transport for the journey.

Putco has announced enhanced safety preparations across its fleet, including the installation of multiple cameras on buses to monitor driver behaviour and help ensure passenger safety throughout the busy period. The extra precautions are part of broader efforts by transport and road safety authorities to reduce crashes and save lives during peak travel times.

Last year’s Easter road safety report showed a significant reduction in road crashes and fatalities compared with the previous year, as targeted campaigns and enforcement measures helped to improve safety on national roads. Traffic and transport officials have called on all road users — whether driving private vehicles or travelling by bus — to remain vigilant, follow road rules, avoid fatigue, and prioritise safety.

With Putco’s preparations and national safety campaigns underway, authorities hope that travellers will reach their destinations and return home safely during the busy Easter period.
