Funeral Shooting in Motherwell Leads to Arrest of 33‑Year‑Old
Motherwell, Eastern Cape — A solemn funeral service in Motherwell’s NU 10 township took a frightening turn on Saturday, 21 March, when gunfire erupted and a 33‑year‑old man was arrested in connection with the incident, police confirmed.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers from the Motherwell Technical Response Team acted swiftly after receiving information about a shooting linked to the funeral gathering on Mbaza Street. As the team was conducting a way‑lay operation, they observed a white Volkswagen Polo Vivo whose driver allegedly discharged shots in the direction of the property where mourners had gathered.
The suspect was immediately intercepted, and a subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered two 9 mm pistols with their serial numbers removed, two magazines, five rounds of ammunition and two empty cartridges. The man was unable to produce a valid firearm licence, leading to his arrest.
He is expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on charges including possession of unlicensed/prohibited firearms, possession of unlicensed ammunition and unlawful discharge of a firearm in a public place.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata praised the rapid response by police, saying their actions were instrumental in preventing further violence and reinforcing efforts to protect communities.
Local residents expressed shock that an event meant for mourning was disrupted by violence, highlighting ongoing concerns around safety and illegal firearms in the region.
Police investigations continue, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward and assist with the case.
