TSAKANE, Gauteng — As part of ongoing festive-season safety operations, law-enforcement authorities arrested 27 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol on Christmas Day (25 December 2025) in the Tsakane area of Ekurhuleni.

The arrests were made during a joint traffic enforcement operation conducted by officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Tsakane Precinct together with the National Traffic Police.

Officers stopped motorists at a roadblock at the corner of Tsakane Road and Modjadji Road after detecting a strong smell of alcohol and signs of intoxication such as slurred speech. Breathalyser tests confirmed that all 27 drivers — both male and female aged roughly between 30 and 56 years old — were over the legal alcohol limit for driving.

Those arrested were first taken to a nearby healthcare facility to be processed by a registered nurse before being detained at the Tsakane police station. They are expected to appear in the Tsakane Magistrate’s Court soon to face charges related to driving under the influence.

Traffic authorities continue to urge motorists to drive responsibly during the festive season and to avoid drinking and driving, as impaired driving remains a significant risk factor for road accidents nationwide.
