Rustenburg, North West – A former attorney is at the centre of a major fraud scandal after he allegedly stole more than R2 million in Road Accident Fund (RAF) compensation that was meant for his clients.

Emmanuel Mosele Tau (52) appeared in the Rustenburg Magistrates’ Court, facing multiple charges of theft and fraud. The accusations suggest that instead of transferring RAF payouts to the victims — many of whom were injured and desperately in need of the funds — Tau allegedly pocketed the money for himself.

According to investigators, several clients opened cases after months of waiting for their settlements, only to discover that the RAF had already paid out their claims. The money, however, never reached them.

The matter was escalated to the Hawks, who launched an intensive investigation that led to Tau’s arrest. Prosecutors say more victims are expected to come forward as the full extent of the alleged theft becomes clearer.

Tau, who has since been struck off the roll of attorneys, is currently out on bail while the investigation continues. The case has sparked outrage among the public, with many calling for stricter oversight of legal practitioners handling RAF settlements.

Authorities have urged any additional victims to report their cases to ensure all charges are consolidated.
