More than 100 drivers arrested in Newcastle for drink driving

More than 100 drivers spent the weekend in jail after being arrested in Newcastle on suspicion of drink driving.

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya has warned motorists that reckless or drunk driving can lead to them becoming criminals.

“These people have caused suffering to many families including widows, orphans and the disabled.

“We have agreed with Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that we will intensify the work of various agencies during this transport month until the holidays and public holidays.

“We have a responsibility to deal directly with those who undermine public safety by drinking excessively.

“Importantly, the National Minister of Health, Mrs Nomagugu Simelane-Mngadi, has instructed health professionals to provide us with blood samples when we work, this will ensure that we are prosecuted appropriately.

“We have agreed to work together to ensure that we reduce the number of admissions due to alcohol-related injuries.
