Taxi Council Warns 15 Million Commuters Could Face Higher Fares Soon
South Africa’s taxi industry has warned that around 15 million commuters may soon pay higher fares as the cost‑of‑doing business for taxi operators continues to rise. According to the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), increasing fuel prices, operating costs, and economic pressures are placing significant strain on the industry.
Santaco officials say that without adjustments to taxi fares, many operators will struggle to cover expenses such as fuel, tyres, servicing, and other essential costs — making it difficult to sustain daily commuter services. The industry’s warning comes amid ongoing concerns about affordability for passengers who rely heavily on minibus taxis as their main form of transport.
The council highlighted that millions of commuters — especially those without access to private vehicles or alternative transport — could be most affected if fare increases are implemented. Santaco has called on government and relevant authorities to consider support measures that could help stabilise fare structures without unduly burdening commuters.
