Eskom Threatens to Reinstate Rolling Blackouts Amid Power Supply Worries

South Africa’s power utility Eskom has warned that it may reintroduce rolling blackouts if the country’s electricity supply situation does not improve. The announcement comes as ongoing operational challenges and breakdowns at power stations continue to put strain on the national grid.

Eskom officials have indicated that without immediate improvements in electricity generation capacity and reduced unplanned breakdowns, the risk of load shedding could rise again. The utility has urged increased efforts to address maintenance backlogs and to bring more generating units back online.

Load shedding — where electricity is deliberately cut to different areas at scheduled times to safeguard the grid — was reduced earlier as Eskom implemented maintenance and stability measures. However, recent system pressure and unit failures have led to renewed concerns over possible power cuts.

Eskom chief executives and engineers are reportedly working to stabilise generation output, but have acknowledged that the system remains vulnerable if there are continued disruptions at major power plants. The utility is also engaging with government and industry stakeholders to find longer‑term solutions to energy challenges.

The potential return of load shedding has sparked concern among businesses and residents, as power interruptions can disrupt economic activity and daily life. Eskom encouraged all electricity users to conserve energy where possible to help reduce pressure on the grid.

The utility’s warnings underline the ongoing challenges facing South Africa’s electricity sector as it seeks to balance supply and demand under difficult operational conditions.
