King Misuzulu to marry third wife, Queen Nomzamo Myeni, in traditional ceremony

King Misuzulu kaZwelithini will officially marry Queen Nomzamo Myeni in a traditional ceremony, known as umgceke, at the KwaKhangelamankengane Royal Palace in Nongoma on Sunday, November 9.

The much-anticipated royal wedding was originally scheduled for January but was postponed as the king entered a period of self-isolation to pray for the nation and the first fruits ceremony. The delay sparked speculation about the couple’s relationship after Queen Nomzamo was absent from some of the king’s public events.

Queen Nomzamo, a former bank collector from Pongola, met the king during his visit to his hometown. Their relationship has followed traditional Zulu customs from the start.

According to Professor Sihawu Ngubane of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, the full payment of the dowry and the umembeso ceremony held in May have confirmed her status as one of the king’s wives. “Traditionally, she has been recognised as Queen Nomzamo Myeni ever since,” Ngubane explained.

Queen Nomzamo becomes the third queen consort, following recent royal developments, including the appointment of Princess Sihle Mdluli as Queen Consort, a move that strengthens the relationship between the Zulu and Ndwandwe royal families.

Thousands of visitors and dignitaries are expected to gather at the KwaKhangelamankengane Palace next weekend to witness the historic celebration of culture and royal unity.
